Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa)

The Sweet chestnut, Castanea sativa, is no relation to the Horse chestnut. It's not strictly speaking native to the UK, but was most likely imported by the Romans, which technically makes it an archaeophyte - and with a much longer history here than the Horse chestnut! It's a tree useful for its nuts and wood (see image), and often found in coppiced plantations, but which also makes for a beautiful large specimen on its own or in mixed woodland. Its trunk is deeply and beautifully fissured, and the leaves yellow in autumn.

Uses

Castanea sativa is still an important plant in some parts of Italy; we stumbled across a Sweet chestnut festival in a village outside Perugia a few years back, where locals were roasting the nuts and selling Castanea sativa's rich dark honey. There are cultivars available now which will give you bigger and more nuts than the native tree, and much quicker. They also seem to be more tolerant of a range of soil conditions.

Unfortunately the UK's more temperate climate means we can't currently make the honey here, but the Romans certainly ate the nuts and ground them to make flour - legionaries ate Sweet chestnut porridge before battle. The nuts have lots of starch - and hence make good (gluten free!) flour. The trees were sometimes known as "bread trees", but they have other uses too.

Particularly in the southeast on acid soils, where it's most common and self seeds very happily, you'll find managed coppiced Sweet chestnut plantations (see photo). It's a beautiful wood with a straight grain when young, and easy to work. It's most usually coppiced to produce poles or stakes, which we're familiar with as like alder they're resistant to rotting. They're widely used as stakes for erosion mitigation work for riverbanks.

Value For Wildlife

Sweet chestnut leaves are eaten by a range of invertebrates, particularly micro moths, but also including the rose chafer. The plants produce good nectar flow in higher temperatures.

Plants For Sale

Like all the native trees we sell, our Sweet Chestnuts are grown in the UK from UK origin seed. We also sell grafted French Sweet chestnut cultivars.

Suppliers: RV Roger, British Hardwood Trees.

See our planting and size guide for details and tips on planting. These hazel trees are all bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March (please ask if you are interested in pot grown plants). During the lifting season there may be up to a month's delay between placing the order and dispatching, due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders placed between March and September are confirmed in October ready for dispatch from November.

Have a look at our videos on what to do when your plants arrive and how to plant a bare root tree. Please ask about larger trees; we can often supply them but will need to quote on an individual basis as carriage varies so much.

Perfect for people who take carry on bags flying to beach vacation!
Style: Spray (2 Oz)
THE only spray on sunscreen, that is NOT a 200 SPF, thats less than 3.5 ounces so TSA doesnt confiscate it from bag en route to Cancun. I keep a few in the drawer and take the partially used one from last trip to finish off plus a new sealed one as backup. Smells great and sprays a fine lovely mist so you dont fry. LOVE this product. A GREAT purchase. We dont check bags and its hard to find ANY product in under 3.5 ounce packaging. Sure you can pour sunscreen into bottles that mfg says do not leak, but youll learn the hard way that they DO leak all over the inside of your suitcase. Skip that learning experience and buy COOLA.

Best Sunscreen and Reef Safe
Style: Spray (6 Oz)
I've been using this sunscreen for a couple of years now and this is the one! The lotion and the spray are both great, smell good and are reef friendly and organic. They are pricey but my skin appreciates the extra!

Worked well near the equator
Style: SPF 50
I bought this product because I was going to be in the field for a month, outside, every day, all day, in Tanzania at high altitude. A severe sunburn would be hard to treat in the remote area we were in, but also I am very careful about protecting my skin from aging. I had to have mineral based sunscreen because as a whitewater kayaker I know it’s the only truly water resistant kind and it was going to be sweaty. And since I knew I was going to be putting it on every day, and we didn’t have running water in the field (bucket showers only) I didn’t want it to feel gross. (I really wanted to try the spray but I didn’t want to put anything pressurized in my luggage.) And I had already discovered the Coola face sunscreen (30spf version) which had impressed me with how silky smooth and not greasy it is. Now this IS greasier because it is a higher SPF. BUT I think this product is as good as you’re going to get with the protection you’re getting. Like I said, I’m a white water tiger, so I have used a LOT of mineral sunscreens. This was hands down the most comfortable one I’ve used. And it was effective. I didn’t burn once—only time I did burn was when I forgot to put it on one day toward the end of the trip, when we were out for just a couple hours—and I got the first 2nd degree burn I’ve ever had in my life. That was what this stuff had protected me from, all day every day, the entire trip. I did tan a little but I think that was mostly from the few times I was not covered during short bouts or it was cloudy. For my face I used the Coola 50spf face product.
