Tandem Roller Assembly for Gliding Patio Doors
Key Features
- 1-1/4" Steel Ball Bearing Wheels: Precision-engineered steel wheels provide a smooth, low-friction glide even for heavy double-pane glass doors, ensuring effortless operation.
- Tandem Load Distribution: The dual-wheel configuration distributes the door's weight across a larger surface area, significantly reducing wear on the track and preventing "flat spots" on the wheels.
- High-Capacity Galvanized Housing: Constructed from heavy-gauge galvanized steel to resist corrosion and structural bending, making it ideal for high-humidity or coastal environments.
- Side-Access Adjustment Screw: Features a conveniently located internal screw that allows you to easily raise or lower the door height to ensure perfect vertical alignment with the side jamb.
- Universal Drop-In Design: Engineered for a precise fit into the bottom rail of standard gliding doors, requiring no specialized tools for a standard replacement.
Replaces / Cross-Reference Part Numbers
- Current Standard: 1997061 (Used for doors manufactured from 1982 to Present).
- Legacy Standard: 1273704 (Used for doors manufactured from 1964 to 1982).
Compatibility & Fitment
This tandem roller is the primary replacement part for the most popular Andersen-brand gliding door systems. Key compatible series include:
- Andersen Perma-Shield: Fits the majority of Perma-Shield Gliding Patio Doors manufactured since 1964.
- Andersen Frenchwood: Compatible with Frenchwood Gliding (FWG) patio doors.
- Andersen Narroline & A-Series: Direct fit for Narroline (NL) and newer A-Series gliding door systems.
- Note: While this part is standard for Andersen, it is essential to verify your existing housing dimensions and wheel diameter (1-1/4") before ordering.
When to Replace
- Door is Hard to Slide: Opening or closing the door requires significant physical effort, indicating that the ball bearings have seized or the wheels have become misshapen.
- Grinding or Squeaking Noise: A loud metallic sound as the door moves suggests the steel wheels are dragging across the track rather than rolling freely.
- Door Jumps or Sags: The door feels "bumpy" when in motion or sits crooked in the frame, often causing air leaks and difficulty with the locking mechanism.
- Visible Rust on Bearings: In high-moisture areas, the internal steel bearings can corrode and lock up, preventing the wheel from turning at all.
- Stripped Adjustment Screw: You can no longer level the door because the internal adjustment threads have failed due to age or overtightening.
Installation Tips
- Safety First: CRITICAL: Gliding patio doors are extremely heavy. Always use two people to lift the door panel out of the track and lay it flat on a protected surface (like a moving blanket).
- Clean the Track: PRO TIP: Before installing the new rollers, use a vacuum and a damp cloth to remove all sand, pet hair, and debris from the bottom track. A dirty track is the primary cause of premature roller failure.
- Retract the Wheels: Ensure the new rollers are in their "fully retracted" (lowest) position before snapping them into the door rail; this provides the clearance needed to lift the door back onto the track.
- Level the Door: Once the door is back in place, use a screwdriver to adjust both rollers until the gap between the door and the side jamb is perfectly even from top to bottom.
- Dry Lubrication: Do not use thick grease or oil on the track. Use a Dry Silicone Spray on the rollers and track to provide lubrication without attracting dirt and grit.
