De boeteling blijkt afkomstig uit Brugge en zo raakt de onvolprezen commissaris Pieter Van In bij de moordzaak betrokken. Via het onderzoek komt Van In in contact met een bekende Brugse familie met een verleden dat teruggaat tot het Belgische koloniale tijdperk. De recent overleden grootvader was namelijk de leider van een huurlingenleger dat de zelfstandigheid van de rijke provincie Katanga moest bevechten. Het gerucht gaat dat hij voor zijn militaire prestaties meer dan rijkelijk beloond werd door het Katangese regime. Toch leefde onze held in Brugge zeker niet in grote welstand en sterft hij veeleer in eenzaamheid. Dan duiken er documenten op die gewagen van een goudschat. De hebzucht van de familie kent geen grenzen meer… Wordt de schat gevonden en wat is het verband met de raadselachtige moord op de Brugse pelgrim?
