Bijvoorbeeld de getallen 8x40 op een verrekijker houdt in dat de kijker een vergroting heeft van 8x en een objectiefdiameter van 40 mm, dit houdt in dat de objecten die u bekijkt 8x dichterbij worden gehaald, en dat de objectieven (de lenzen aan de voorkant van de kijker) een diameter van 40 mm hebben. Als de diameter groter is, zal de verrekijker meer licht binnen laten, en je dus een helderder beeld hebt.
