Masari 'Leon' Durello Spumante 2024 is an Italian white sparkling wine. From the rugged, high-altitude terrain of Valle d'Agno in the Veneto—where vineyards cling to volcanic soils at 350 meters above sea level—comes this exceptional sparkling wine that embodies both the power and elegance suggested by its name. Leon, meaning "lion" in Italian, is crafted by MASARI, a estate born in 1998 from the shared passion of Massimo Dal Lago and Arianna Tessari, who dedicated themselves to recovering the history, land, and viticulture of this distinctive valley bordering the mountainous Sud Tyrol.
Made from 100% Durella grapes—a rare indigenous varietal seldom found outside Valle d'Agno—this spumante de calidad (quality sparkling wine) showcases the unique character of its volcanic terroir. The grapes are meticulously handpicked into cases and gently pressed to preserve their delicate qualities. The wine then rests in contact with the lees until spring, developing complexity and creaminess, before undergoing an impressive 42 months of bottle aging that refines its structure and deepens its character.
Tasting Notes:
In the glass, Leon displays a luminous straw yellow with persistent, fine bubbles. The nose is captivating—mineral notes reminiscent of wet stone and chalk intertwine with creamy, brioche-like aromas from the extended lees contact, while fresh floral hints of white blossoms and acacia add lift and elegance.
On the palate, the wine is wonderfully crisp and fresh, with vibrant acidity that energizes the generous richness of flavor. Layers of green apple, citrus zest, and white peach unfold alongside that distinctive volcanic minerality, while the creamy mousse provides textural depth. The lengthy finish reveals subtle almond notes and a saline quality that speaks to the wine's mountain origins, leaving you with a clean, invigorating impression that invites another sip.
