The legend of the Sicilian Testa di Moro heads, also known as "Moorish heads," is a tale of love and revenge dating back to the Arab domination of Sicily. According to the legend, a young Sicilian woman fell in love with a Moorish man, but when her family discovered the romance, they punished the lovers by beheading them. In an act of love and vengeance, the young woman used the lovers’ heads as pots for her basil plants, watering them with her tears—thus giving rise to the now-famous Moorish head-shaped vases
